Jean Ciara Bernier, MD is a member of Summit Health's Family Medicine team. Dr. Bernier provides primary care to patients age 18 and older with a focus on preventive medicine and the management of chronic conditions. She also has an interest in women’s health and is experienced in performing pap smears and insertions of birth control devices including IUDs and implants such as Nexplanon®. In addition, with a background in urgent care practice she offers experience with fracture management, lacerations, skin issues, and other acute concerns.
Dr. Bernier believes education is a key element of her role as a physician. “My goal is to treat the cause and not just the symptoms; I believe this starts with education,” she says, adding that open dialogue with patients and engaging them in their care also are integral to any treatment plan.
A family vacation to Jacmel, Haiti, in 2003 crystallized Dr. Bernier’s decision to pursue a career in medicine. “My passion for health and the medical sciences has been long-lasting; however, it did not engender such commitment until I was exposed to the realities of health care in the developing world,” she says, adding, “I witnessed communities suffering from so many preventable diseases.”
Her experience in Haiti deepened her passion for education and creating forums for exchanging information regarding disease prevention, as well working to close gaps in health care. She is a strong proponent of regular health screenings and proper nutrition as components of preventive care and treatment, as well. “Healthy living is my goal for the patient, and I am here to listen and help,” she says.
In her free time, Dr. Bernier enjoys practicing ballet, making earrings (beaded creations are her specialty), learning how to knit, and exercising.
