About Me
Jason Abfier, MD, MS is a member of Summit Health’s Gastroenterology team, and specializes in diagnosing and treating a wide range of digestive illnesses, as well as providing counseling on GI disease and prevention. Dr. Abfier sees patients 18 years and older and is very interested in colorectal cancer screening, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus, peptic ulcer disease, Celiac disease, IBD, diverticular disease, hepatobiliary disease and more. He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, and American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
His philosophy to care is through incorporating empathy and listening in his practice. “Patients need their physician to understand how they are feeling, treating them as a human being and not just a disease. I often advise patients to try to control what they can control”, says Dr. Abfier. He believes that while genetics can’t be controlled, diet, exercise and staying current with cancer screenings are important factors in disease prevention.
With respect to his specialty, Dr. Abfier loves the combination of the cerebral aspects of gastroenterology, the physiology of the gut and the ability to directly impact disease through education and prevention.
In addition, Dr. Abfier has received the following Honors:
- Castle Connolly Top Doctors New York Metro Area (digital guide): 2020, 2021, 2022
- Hudson Valley Magazine Top Doctors: 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021
- New York Magazine Top Doctors: 2021
When not practicing medicine, Dr. Abfier loves spending time with his family – skiing, hiking, traveling, watching 80’s movies and more. Additionally, he supports several causes in his community that have a common theme of tolerance, equity and acceptance.
