Overview

The Ambulatory Surgery Center at Summit Health is a patient-centered, outpatient surgery facility for people who do not need to stay overnight in a hospital. Our skilled physicians perform a wide range of surgical procedures, and most patients walk out and head home the same day. It is expert, comfortable, and convenient care built entirely around you.

What is ambulatory surgery?

Ambulatory surgery, also called outpatient or same-day surgery, allows you to have a procedure and return home the same day. You receive the same high level of surgical expertise you would expect from a hospital, but in a warm, streamlined setting designed for shorter, planned procedures. This means less time away from your daily life and a faster, more comfortable recovery in your own home.

Conditions and procedures

Our experienced surgical team performs many types of same-day procedures. Our ambulatory surgery services include, but are not limited to:

If you are unsure whether your procedure can be done as outpatient surgery, your Summit Health physician can help you understand your options and what to expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your care team will give you detailed, personalized instructions before your surgery. In general, you may be asked to stop eating or drinking after a certain time, adjust or pause certain medications, arrange a ride home, and wear loose, comfortable clothing. Following these instructions closely helps your procedure go smoothly. If you have any questions, we are always here to help.

Yes. Because you may receive anesthesia or sedation, you should not drive yourself home. Please arrange for a responsible adult to drive you and stay with you afterward. We recommend waiting at least 24 hours before you drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions.

When you arrive, our team will check you in and help you get settled. You will meet your surgical and anesthesia team, review your care plan, and have the chance to ask any last questions. After your procedure, you will rest in our recovery area until you are ready to go home. Most patients go home the same day with clear instructions for a comfortable recovery.

An ambulatory surgery center focuses only on planned, same-day procedures, while hospitals handle a much broader range of care, including overnight stays and emergencies. This focus often means shorter wait times, a more personal experience, and a calmer setting. You still receive the same level of surgical expertise and safety, just in an environment built for outpatient care.
