About Me
James Lopes, MD, FACS, is a member of Summit Health’s Bariatric (weight loss) and General Surgery teams. Dr. Lopes treats a broad spectrum of conditions, including gallbladder disease, hernias, heartburn, diverticulosis and cancers (stomach, small intestine, colon). As a bariatric surgeon, he treats obesity and gives patients the ability to regain their lives by helping them lose weight and become healthier. His program focuses on developing a full weight loss program, utilizes small incision surgery to minimize postoperative pain, and utilizes a comprehensive bariatric team approach for optimal results.
“Maintaining a practice with so much variety keeps my skills sharp and makes me a better surgeon. It also keeps me abreast of the latest treatment options for the body as a whole,” says Dr. Lopes.
Dr. Lopes finds the human body fascinating. “Being a doctor allows me to use my love for science and medicine in order to help people” He views his career as a privilege and very much believes in the doctor-patient relationship saying, “It’s a true team effort to find the best possible treatment, whether it be a surgical or non-surgical option. For me the ultimate reward is knowing that I’ve enabled a patient to become active again and feel great.”
Dr. Lopes is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery. During his surgical residency, Dr. Lopes was author to several published research studies and articles in surgical journals. He is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), American Medical Association (AMA), American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
As a father of two, Dr. Lopes free time is completely devoted to his family. He enjoys running, bike riding, and watching baseball.
