About Me

Matthew J. Garberina, MD is Service Line Chief, Orthopedic Surgery, Neuroscience, Musculoskeletal Medicine at Summit Health and a member of the Clinical Governance Board at Summit Health. He has expertise in open and arthroscopic treatment of common and complex problems of the shoulder and elbow as well as fractures of the upper extremities. He has extensive experience performing hundreds of surgeries each year with a focus on primary and revision shoulder arthroplasty (including anatomic and reverse replacements), arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and instability procedures, post-traumatic reconstruction of the shoulder and elbow, elbow arthroscopy and soft tissue repair, as well as sports medicine and upper extremity trauma.

During his residency at Duke University, he provided orthopedic coverage for the Duke and North Carolina Central University men’s and women’s varsity teams. He was a resident physician for the Duke University 2000/2001 men’s basketball national championship team. While at Duke University, junior orthopedic residents selected Dr. Garberina for the John M. Harrelson Chief Resident Teaching Award. He also served as Chief Resident at the Durham Veteran’s Administration Hospital.

After residency, Dr. Garberina was a United States Air Force orthopedic surgeon, attaining the rank of Major before being honorably discharged in 2006. In 2004, he was named Chief of Orthopedics at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey. There, he was responsible for the orthopedic care of active, reserve, veteran and dependent patients in the McGuire AFB/Ft. Dix area.

He began his fellowship training in shoulder and elbow reconstruction at the University of Pennsylvania in 2006. There, he published book chapters, surgical techniques and case reports on upper extremity surgery and was involved in resident education and training.

Dr. Garberina has been at the Summit Health since finishing his fellowship training in 2007. He has delivered local, regional, national, and international invited presentations in his field, and he teaches courses on total shoulder replacement and upper extremity fractures surgery, including at the AAOS Orthopaedic Learning Center in Chicago, Illinois. He has delivered lectures for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society and the Mid-Atlantic Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. He has held multiple committee memberships within the Summit Health and Atlantic Health System, including a term on the Executive Committee at Overlook Hospital. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Mid-Atlantic Shoulder and Elbow Society, The Phoenix Shoulder and Elbow Society, the Piedmont Orthopaedic Society and he is an Associate Member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. He served as Chair of the Summit Health Department of Orthopedics for 2020-2022.

Dr. Garberina is the youngest of 4 adopted children. When he is not working with his patients, he enjoys golf, exercise and spending time with his wife, Sofia, and his daughters, Ava and Lila.
