Michael Mitacchione, DPT, OCS, Cert. MDT, CSCS is a member of Summit Health's Physical Therapy team. Dr. Mitacchione has worked exclusively in orthopedic and sports physical therapy since he started his career as a physical therapist. He specializes in orthopaedic injuries with a special focus on evaluation and treatment of the spine, including advanced spinal mobilizations/manipulations, Graston technique, McKenzie technique, Maitland technique, and Mulligan concepts. Additionally, he has taken special interest in post-concussion evaluation and treatment of patients. During his sessions, Dr. Mitacchione utilizes a combination of manual therapy, exercise, patient education, and good humor. He says, “I like to try to make my patients laugh so they have a good time while in therapy for something that may be causing them a lot of stress.”
Dr. Mitacchione was inspired to pursue a career in physical therapy as a second career. “When my mother was in her forties, she needed to have both hips replaced due to a congenital malformation. I remember how much physical therapy she had and how much it helped her.” From that point, Dr. Mitacchione knew that becoming a physical therapist – a job where he could help others return to normal activities while using both his hands and his mind - was the right path for him.
Dr. Mitacchione is board certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties as an Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist (OCS), which is considered the highest clinical credential attainable by an orthopaedic therapist and is held by less than two percent of practicing therapists in the United States. Dr. Mitacchione is also certified in Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment (Cert. MDT) by the renowned McKenzie Institute of New Zealand and United States. This is a specialized credential dealing with the evaluation and treatment of spinal disorders. Additionally, Dr. Mitacchione is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) with the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
When not working with patients, Dr. Mitacchione enjoys spending time with his wife and twin daughters.
