Advanced, minimally invasive care for head and neck vascular conditions
Summit Health’s Head and Neck Embolization Program offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment for adults with complex vascular conditions affecting the head, neck and brain. Located at 150 Park Avenue in Florham Park, the program brings together experienced interventional radiology, vascular surgery, neurointerventional radiology, imaging and specialty care teams to help patients receive timely, coordinated care in one convenient location.
Our highly trained team treats a range of conditions, including venous malformations, lymphatic malformations, select arterial lesions and brain aneurysms. Whenever possible, care is provided in an outpatient setting right in our Interventional Radiology Center using minimally invasive techniques designed to target the affected area with accuracy and efficiency so patients can return home the same day.
A comprehensive program in one convenient location
As part of Summit Health’s larger Interventional Radiology (IR) Program, the Head and Neck Embolization Program makes it easier for patients to get the care they need in one place, including consultations, advanced imaging, lab work and many minimally invasive procedures. Having these services in one building helps make care more convenient, coordinated and simple to navigate.
Patients benefit from:
- Outpatient procedure center and minimally invasive treatment options
- On-site lab and imaging, including 3T MRI and PET/CT
- Direct access to interventional radiology specialists
- Coordination with neurosurgery, ENT, plastic surgery, neurology, and oncology when needed
- A dedicated IR phone number answered by a live team member
Conditions we treat
Our specialists evaluate and treat adults ages 18 and older with head, neck and brain vascular conditions, including:
- Head and neck arteriovenous malformations (AVMs)
- Venous malformations
- Lymphatic malformations
- Select arterial vascular lesions
- Brain aneurysms
- Brain and head/neck lesions requiring diagnostic angiography
- Vascular conditions requiring embolization before surgery
Minimally invasive treatment options
Many head and neck vascular malformations can be treated directly at our Florham Park facility using minimally invasive techniques. Treatment options may include:
- Embolization of venous and lymphatic malformations: A minimally invasive procedure that uses a small needle or catheter to deliver medication or embolic material—tiny medical particles, coils or special agents used to block abnormal blood flow—directly into the malformation. This can help shrink the malformation or close off abnormal blood vessels.
- Treatment of select arterial lesions: Care for certain abnormal blood vessels that may need targeted treatment to reduce or block blood flow.
- Diagnostic angiograms: Imaging tests that allow doctors to see blood vessels in detail and better understand the condition.
- Pre-surgical embolization to help reduce bleeding risk: Embolization may be done before surgery to help block blood flow to the area and lower the risk of bleeding.
- Brain aneurysm evaluation and angiography: Diagnostic angiograms may be performed at Summit Health. If coil treatment or another hospital-based procedure is needed, our team will coordinate the next step in the hospital setting.
Coordinated care with experienced specialists
The program is led by physicians with years of experience treating vascular conditions through minimally invasive techniques. Our interventional radiology team works closely with specialists across Summit Health, including neurosurgery, ENT, plastic surgery, neurology and oncology.
This team-based approach can be especially helpful for patients who need embolization before surgery. In some cases, treating a vascular malformation before it is removed can help reduce bleeding and support a safer, more planned procedure.
Faster access to specialty care
Many hospital-based programs have long wait times for evaluation and treatment. At Summit Health, our goal is to help patients be seen quickly, complete imaging and lab work efficiently and receive a personalized care plan without unnecessary delays.
Referring physicians can send patients directly to our Interventional Radiology team for evaluation.
What to expect
Your first visit typically includes a consultation with a minimally invasive specialist who has expertise in interventional neurology or radiology. Depending on your condition, your care plan may include imaging, lab work, diagnostic angiography or a minimally invasive procedure.
For many head and neck malformations, treatment can be performed at our Florham Park facility. Some patients may need multiple treatment sessions, depending on the size, location and complexity of the lesion.
