When answering the questions, consider how you would experience hearing in each situation without the use of hearing aids and other devices that help you hear better.

For each item, indicate the degree to which you agree or disagree. Choose 0 if you strongly disagree and choose 4 if you strongly agree with the statement.

Hearing Test

  • I have trouble following a conversation when two or more people speak at the same time.
  • People have commented that I turn up the television volume too much.
  • I have difficulty hearing telephone conversations.
  • I have trouble hearing conversations in noisy backgrounds such as social occasions.
  • I strain to hear what people are saying in face-to-face conversations.
  • I need to ask people to repeat themselves.
  • People get annoyed because I do not understand what they say.
  • I have not problem hearing but it seems like people are mumbling.
  • I miss hearing certain common sounds such as the phone or doorbell.
  • I have a hard time telling where sounds are coming from.
  • I especially have trouble understanding the speech of women and children.
  • I have worked in noisy environments such as factories or construction sites.

Scoring

20 or below: It is unlikely that you are experiencing hearing problems and no further screening is needed.

21 – 50: You may be experiencing some hearing loss. We recommend that you have your hearing tested by a Summit Health audiologist.

51 or higher: It is likely that you are experiencing hearing problems and should be screened by a Summit Health audiologist to assess your options.
