Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can cause inflammation, swelling and pain. It can affect any part of your body, but lupus most commonly affects your skin, joints and internal organs, such as the kidneys and heart. Most people diagnosed with lupus are adults. However, one-fifth of lupus cases occur in children under the age of 18.
