Summit Health provides comprehensive women’s health care, including uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), a non-surgical treatment for uterine fibroids.

At our facility, patients have access to a wide range of state-of-the-art diagnostic testing and treatments as well as access to state-of-the-art image-guided techniques and nonsurgical options that result in faster recovery times, positive outcomes, and long-term effectiveness.

Is UFE the right treatment for you?

If you are experiencing unpleasant symptoms such as menstrual pain requiring medication, heavy bleeding, frequent urination, or anemia, you may be affected by one or more fibroids, benign growths that develop from the cells of the uterus. While common, with as many as 80 percent of women presenting with them before the age of 50, fibroids can cause symptoms that affect a woman’s physical and emotional well-being and negatively impact their quality of life. When medication does not work, uterine fibroid embolization is an option to consider.

Our comprehensive Uterine Fibroid Embolization Center offers a pre-procedure consultation, MRI imaging (to visualize anatomy and determine the extent of the fibroids), and state-of-the art interventional radiology equipment all in one compassionate setting.

What is UFE?

Uterine Fibroid Embolization is a minimally invasive procedure where small particles are injected into the arteries to diminish the blood supply to the fibroids, causing them to shrink. Benefits include:

  • Non-surgical approach. No hospital stay required
  • Minimally invasive with no incision or scar wound
  • Uterus and ovary preserving

How is the procedure performed?

An anesthesiologist will sedate the patient and monitor vital signs throughout the procedure. UFE is performed through an arterial puncture at the left wrist or right groin. Once a catheter is placed in the uterine arteries, the bead embolization is performed under live motion X-ray.

Procedure time is typically around one hour. The uterus remains intact while the fibroids shrink over a period of several weeks.

Meet Our Team

Our team of experts, including physicians, registered nurses, anesthesiologists, technologists, schedulers, and fellowship-trained, board-certified interventional radiologists, has years of experience in advanced embolization techniques for the treatment of uterine fibroids. Uterine Fibroid providers

Our physicians have performed more outpatient center UFE procedures than anyone in New Jersey. They have also been recognized by NJ Monthly Magazine’s annual Top Doctor recognition, presented research at the Society of Interventional Radiology’s annual meeting, and have been honored at the American Cancer Society Diamond Ball.

Additionally, we are the only outpatient center in New Jersey where consultation, imaging, laboratory, and the embolization procedure is performed all in one location.
